Cash Money Millionaires - Platinum Instrumentals

Cash Money Millionaires - Platinum Instrumentals
Cash Money Millionaires was a super group that represented the muddy banks of New Orleans, LA. The group consisted of Mannie Fresh, Baby, Lil' Wayne, Juvenile, Turk and B.G. The collective was fabricated during the late nineties through the originally constructed Hot Boy$ and Big Tymers. As the name suggests, Platinum Instrumentals was a instrumental album which was released in 2000 on Cash Money Records. The album is basically compiled with the hottest singles ever released under the infamous label. As always, production is handled by the musical genius, Mannie Fresh. He brings his classic style to the table and certainly does not disappoint. A style that is often imitated but never duplicated. Even though he is very talented with various types of synthesizers and drum machines, it's his energetic approach and melodic arrangement that sets him apart from others. Not enough can be said about his profound production template that hasn't already been said before. One can only hope to bear witness and ultimately appreciate the sheer brilliance at hand. The record boasts a collection of thirteen tracks which were hand picked off of various releases by the group members. The tracks are not snippets or samples but instead are provided in their original and uncut nature. This release not only helped up and coming artists in their musical endeavors but also gave the Cash Money fan base a collector's item. An item that single-handedly displays the pure intellect and the genuine prowess of the man behind the chart topping music.

Reese & Bigalow - Unfinished Business

Reese & Bigalow - Unfinished Business
Reese & Bigalow is a duo that represents from the infamous Wood Street in Jackson, MS. They first started out in the early nineties as members of The Renegades. The group was one of the first acts to represent for the city of Jackson and eventually paved the way for many other artists, Reese and Bigalow left the group after their initial release and formed their duet while Lon Trigga of The Renegades went on to form the notorious, Wood Street Playaz. Unfinished Business is their second album and it was released in 2000 on Lil Mann's Records. Production is equally split between Mike B, Gutta Boy and JB Money. The beats are Southern in composure and while most of them are fairly enjoyable, there are some that lack a bit of energy and edginess. The three producers do a decent job at constructing the rhythms but it's their simple approach at times that takes a hit. Lyrically, the album is quite good. Both, Reese and Bigalow are pretty adequate on the microphone and their verbal chemistry is also reasonably strong. Their rhymes display constant word play and are also delivered at a fair rate. Guest appearances are courtesy of 20-2-Life, PSK-13, South Park Mexican, Ska-Face Al Capone, Bone Crusher, Crooked Lettaz, King Goldi, Poetic Preachaz, Dez, J2, Frank Da Macka and Fe-Fe. The album closes out with a commendable total of sixteen tracks and the rock solid guest list makes it that much harder to deny. Overall it's a noble release that has a good amount of highs instead of the lows. The only knock on it is the basic production but even with that blemish the album manages to sustain itself. Reese & Bigalow went on to release one more album in 2002 before slowly fading out of the music industry. The groups' unlucky demise was brought by the hands of the Atlanta based rapper known as Bone Crusher. Bone, who was signed to Jermaine Dupri's label known as So So Def, was once a loyal friend who quickly turned foe over ownership of a single track. The song in question is called "Neva Sked" and it comes from Reese & Bigalow's 2002 release known as, "Playa Music." The track featured a verse from Bone Crusher and Killer Mike. It was produced by Avery Johnson and was purchased by Reese & Bigalow for their new album. The exact same song was released by Bone Crusher for his debut album in the year 2003 and the only major difference was the verses of Reese & Bigalow were removed and replaced with a verse from T.I. The title was also changed to "Never Scared." Bone Crusher's version of the song ended up being a chart topping hit and eventually propelled him into the limelight. Reese & Bigalow did file a law suit against Bone Crusher over copyright infringement but they never got the recognition or the praise for the original song. They were most likely paid off by the deep pockets of Jermaine Dupri and were supposedly told to keep their mouths shut about the whole issue. It's unfortunate what happened to Reese & Bigalow but then again it just goes to show how corrupt some of these major labels are and how how cruel this music industry can be at times.

Big Boss - Respect Due

Big Boss was a full time producer and a part time rapper from the notorious boulevards of Houston, TX. Considered by many to be a pioneer for the Hip Hop scene in Texas, Big Boss first started off with his cousin, Original E, in the group called, O.G. Style. Together, they released their highly desirable debut album in 1991, known as "I Know How To Play 'Em," on Rap-A-Lot Records. The two had some moderate success before deciding to part ways. Original E kept the O.G. Style name and recorded under that moniker while Big Boss formed the infamous group, 4 Deep with his brother Koo Rod and Klas' One. Respect Due is his debut solo album and it was released in 2000 on Power Move Music. Production is solely handled by Big Boss himself, and he certainly does not disappoint. Known for providing some hard hitting bass lines and intoxicating hooks, he uses his classic approach and melodic methods to construct the rhythms. The beats are hard, edgy, groovy and funky, all at the same time. His production skills are deadly and they definitely show his veteran and accomplished status in the music industry. Big Boss raps on a few tracks but mostly, he lets his associates take full control of the microphone. Lyrically, the album is quite strong. The artists are used precisely on a given track and they certainly give it their all. Their rhymes compliment the production pattern well and the features don't seem out of place. Guest spots are courtesy of 4 Deep, The Funky Products, South Park Mexican, Da BBC, Lil Daddy, The Waterheadz, Popcycle, Taija and Pancho Villa of Lifestyl. The record signs off with a total of fourteen polished tracks with varying subjects. Overall, it's an impressive work of art by a renowned legend. Not enough can be said about his proficient prowess or his valuable importance in the underground scene from the South. Sadly, Big Boss passed away in 2006 due to kidney failure. He was working on the reunion album for his group, 4 Deep. Rest in peace, to one of the best that ever represented for Houston, Texas.

The Legion - Welcome To Texas

The Legion is a collective that hails from the ruthless streets of Dallas, TX. The group consists of Boom Man, Dexterous, Lil' Mo, and Mr. Lex. They consider themselves as lyrical outlaws and musical outcasts in this watered down music industry. Welcome To Texas is their debut album and it was released in 2000 on Stretched Out Records. Production is solely handled by Boom Man and he does an admirable job on the rhythms. The beats mostly stay uptempo and are quite energetic in composure. Various notes are used to achieve the final result which is both, eclectic and diverse in nature. The tracks are also catered for easy listening and they can accustom to the listener with their bright composure. Lyrics, is where the album really takes off. The four members are nothing less than fascinating upon the microphone. Their flows are rapid and are delivered with swiftness and clarity. Also to note, is the chemistry that the quartet has and how efficiently it is exposed on each and every track. Rhyme schemes are Southern in construction and word play is given the utmost authority. This then gives their songs a colorful and an unpredictable essence which keeps the listener commendably satisfied. Featuring on the album is the local crew known as, C.O.D. The record closes out with an ample total of fifteen solid tracks. Their subject matter is not limited to one category and is versatile enough to appeal to the masses. Overall, this is a very strong release by the group but one that came just a little too early in publication. In the year 2000, a new Southern sound was emerging from the South and was starting to replace the older, Texas Funk. While the new sound was gaining popularity in the underground, it didn't quite catch on to the mainstreams until the mid 2000's. Now, had this record been released in 2004 or late 2005, it could have done wonders for the group. In the end, it just goes to show how far ahead these guys were in their time. Everything from their sound to their lyrics and even their visions, were all progressing towards the right trend. The very trend that exploded on to the music scene just a few years later and was mainly led by artists from the great state of Texas. Sadly, by that time, The Legion had already came and left without even making a whisper.

R.E.S Records - The RESurrection Compilation

R.E.S Records was a Christian Rap label from the unforgiving streets of Houston, TX. The label was started in the mid nineties by Richard Hunt and Otto Osterman. Their main objective was to give a home to the aspiring local Christian Rap emcees in Houston while also keeping them on the right track. The two founders quickly recruited BDI and Dez from the infamous group, Nuk Ruk. The two members from Nuk Ruk were considered to be the primary pieces and the main source of strength for the record label. It was through their help that the record label eventually got more artists on board such as, Tre-9, Snapz, 20/Twenty, Manifest, NSC, The Foundation and last but not least, the singer Jamecia Williams. Work on this compilation began as soon as the crew was assembled in the early part of 1999. It was completed in the year 2000 and released as a debut album by the R.E.S Records. Production is solely handled by the masterful, BDI and he does not disappoint. BDI's rhythmical pattern is quite unique. He fuses the traditional style of Hip-Hop with the flavorful Southern style. He does this with not only the use of a typical drum machine but also with the use of live instrumentation. Most notably through the work of various guitars and pianos. He also adds his distinct scratches with the turntables which ends up being the final key ingredient for his magnificent beats. Lyrically the album also excels. There is never a dull moment due to the various artists used to create the rhymes. Each artist brings an intellectual style to the table and claim their stake on the microphone with utter precision. Word play is presented with riddling rhyme schemes which makes the end result thoroughly captivating. BDI, Dez, Tre-9 and 20/Twenty are the standouts here but the rest of the acts are not too far behind. Guest appearances are made by Reverse, Queen D, MOG, DJ Excell, B-Boy and Kathy Abshire. All in all, this is an excellent compilation by the label and a must have for any Christian Rap fan. They could have easily talked about materialistic possessions, women, money and the like but they chose to go against the grain. It is always good to hear artists who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in and go against the flow of the norm. The album gives off a truthful yet positive message and it can only be deciphered by listening to their powerful and thought provoking music.

Archie Lee - Da Mista Masta

Archie Tatmon, better known as Archie Lee, is rapper from the Northside of Houston, TX. He is also one of the original members of the infamous, Swishahouse. The Swishahouse is a collective which was founded by Micheal Watts in the mid nineties to counteract all the fame and success the Screwed Up Click was receiving. He recruited rappers from the Northside and started releasing mix tapes with Slowed & Chopped freestyles of his own crew. The tapes caught the city like a wild fire, especially on the northern end. Some liked and even appreciated what Watts was doing, while others discredit his approach due to the fact that DJ Screw and his comrades were the originators of the Chopped & Screwed mix tapes. Although the latter is true and non debatable, it was after DJ Screw's unfortunate passing in 2000, when the Chopped & Screwed or Slowed & Chopped really caught on to the rest of the world. It was Micheal Watts along with O.G. Ron C, who led the charge and re-introduced the rest of the nation to this unorthodox technique. Da Mista Masta by Archie Lee is the very first solo debut of a Swishahouse artist and it was released in 2000 on Swishahouse Records and SwishaBlast Entertainment. The production is manged by Micheal Watts, G-Dash, Bigg Tyme, Micheal Wilder, Jesse Brown and Cedric Page. The beats are not ground breaking but they are passable. Although they contain various elements and have a solid foundation, they still seem very simple and sometimes even mundane. The rhythms mostly cater to the new style of Swang & Bang, which is understandable since this is a release from the new millennium. Lyrical content of the album is also tolerable. Archie Lee won't break any barriers lyrically and certainly won't set any new standards for the Southern region. His flow style is quite common and does not do anything for the listener. Also, his tone and pitch jumps around quite a bit which in turn makes him go off beat a lot. Now, that may be by design and not by some kind of internal flaw. Nevertheless, he still attacks the microphone with passion and flair. Guest appearances are made by Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Lester Roy, Big Tiger, J-Dawg, Lil' Mario, Big Pic, A.D., Sabwarfare, Lil' Ron, Blyndcyde, Bongo, Nancy Taylor and Reginald Hackett. A lengthy guest list is certainly what the main artist needed to give the record an extra boost. All in all, this is a decent effort by the Houston native and it helped the label get going in the right direction. It was after this release, when management realized what components were working and what was not. They started to cater more towards the newer generation of Southern Rap and really propelled themselves into the mainstreams. In the end, this record is a humble beginning which stands as a testament of their hard work and dedication to their art.

Staydown - N-Da-Game

Staydown is a collective that represents from the harsh streets of Waco, TX. The group consists of Slugger, Bugga, Bigg Knocc and Country. The group was formed in the late nineties by Slugger and Bigg Knocc. N-Da-Game is their debut album and it was released in 2000 on Staydown Entertainment. The album was recorded mainly in Houston due to plethora of studios that the city has to offer compared to Waco. The record is masterly produced by the platinum producer, Slugger. The beats are a perfect example of that Texas funk. They contain solid bass lines which are blended with some hard hitting drums. The rhythms are also genuinely crafted and they certainly cater to the Swang & Bang crowd. Slugger gives a lot of attention to detail which in return makes the overall result very crisp and enjoyable. The album also shines in the lyrical department. The members take turns discharging their various styles upon the microphone. Bigg Knocc seems to standout the most but the rest are not too far behind. Their deliveries are full of pace and the variations to their tone and pitch are all done with perfection. Their southern drawl is also quite eminent, while their demeanor and personalities embodies the streets. Guest appearances are made by Ice Lord, 3-2, C-Note, Big Pokey, Lil' O, Billy Cook and Lil' Flip. It may seem as if the album is a little guest heavy due to the star studded guest list but that is not the case at all. The guests are used sporadically and the group relies more on their own intuition. The album closes out with an impressive total of fifteen tracks, with each cut outdoing the other. All in all, this was a remarkable effort by the group but one that seem to have went unnoticed. It is truly a task for artists to represent from the smaller cities in Texas, mainly because of the lack of exposure they will receive. Staydown knew of this dilemma and changed their approach accordingly. They could have just easily recorded at a local studio in Waco, instead they drove back and forth to Houston and recorded at one of the more famous spots. Not only did this move help to establish connections in the city but it also augmented their reputation. They group went on to release a follow up album in 2005 and then disbanded. At the end of the day, this release will always sit as a polished gem, waiting to be discovered from The Heart of Texas.

N.U.T.S. - Shady Like Me

N.U.T.S. is a duo that represents from the raw streets of Knoxville, TN. The duo consists of A.P. and Nico and they have been in the industry since the early nineties. The two are not only established rappers but also well respected producers. Shady Like Me is their fourth album and it was released in 2000 on JK Music. Production is split between Nico and A.P. and it is truly of the exceptional quality. The beats are well crafted with an array of instruments and are strictly southern in content. They are all made originally without the use of samples and are a real treat to listen to. Even though the two producers stick to a simple recipe for the rhythms, the end result is surprisingly quite intricate. The lyrics are also very remarkable considering the time period of the release. The two rappers are just savages on the microphone and they present their rhymes with absolute realism. Their word play is marvelous and it is used as a key component of their compositions. The vocal delivery and timing is done with such precision that it makes their flows about as smooth as butter. The choruses and hooks are also very good and stay diverse throughout. Featuring on the album is K-Jam, Little E, Shay Mo and Chris T. Overall, this is a wonderful work of art with eighteen bona fide tracks. It is amazing to hear such a release that did not get infected by the times. Not only do these two stay true to their art but they also send out a very strong message. They portray themselves as who they are and not what they want to be. The reality is in their music and it oozes a compelling vibe when played. It is now up to the listener to discover this hidden gem and reap the rewards from it.

Disconnected Clique - I Know!

Disconnected Clique - I Know!
Disconnected Clique is a group that represents from the hard streets of Houston, TX. Now as a collective they rep Houston but three of the seven members were recruited from Port Arthur, TX. The group consists of Ace Of Spadz, LaDeris, J' Down, E.J., D-Nick, Li. C and last but not least, the female emcee known as Tryll. I Know! is their debut album and it was released in 2000 on Monumental Records. The bulk of the banging production is provided by Mike Newton and D-Nick while members like Ace Of Spadz, E.J. and LaDeris help out on some tracks. The beats are genuinely smooth and all instruments are used to their legitimate apex. The end result gives off a very fresh vibe and while samples are used, they are by no means the main source of melody. Although this release came at a time when the "Swang & Bang" sound was really emerging, it does not incorporate any of it's elements in it. Instead the production pattern used is of the previous generation which relies heavily on musical melody and a sense of rhythm. Not to downplay or bad mouth the "Swang & Bang" sound but this type of southern production is now literally considered to be a lost art. Lyrically the album is also very well rounded. Each member brings a unique style to the table and are always ready when called upon the microphone. Their rhymes are filled with word play and are also delivered at a decent pace. Group members LaDeris and Ace really stand out from the rest while the others are not too far behind. The guest feature on here is by Kevin Braggs, who basically provides all the singing and back up vocals. An ample total of fifteen choice tracks are provided for the listener which in return make this release thoroughly enjoyable. Also, the picture on the front album cover was taken at the Gerald D. Hines Water Wall Park in the Uptown District of Houston, Texas. Overall this was a commendable effort by the group and one that also takes full advantage of the amenities provided. Coming into the industry with no prior accomplishments is not easy by no means. The group faced many challenges while putting this record together and not only did they overcome them but they also managed to leave an imprint by compiling a solid package. One that happens to shine from all angles and one that also withstands the lengthy test of time.

Hogg & Priest - 5004

Hogg & Priest is a duo from the notorious neighborhood of Mooretown in Shreveport, LA. The rappers met each other in 1995 while studying Music & Arts at Grambling State University in Louisiana. 5004 is their debut album and it was released in 2000 on Playa Made Records. The album's silky smooth and utterly funky production is provided by Tommy Granville Jr. He laces the beats with what is known in this region as that southern fried gumbo funk. Each cut is defined with multiple layers of different instruments and originality is pursued with a passion. The tracks are quite fluid and laid back which in turn makes for a very enjoyable experience. Also the scratching and mixing is provided by DJ Deluxx. Both Hogg and Priest are excellent on the microphone. Their chemistry is unmatched together and they seem to support each other well. The utmost attention is given to word play as well as the actual delivery while their southern dialect is both unique and entertaining. Guest appearances are courtesy of Big T, Big Baby, Carlos Luv, Dre and Ralphiell Walker. Also the wonderful artwork for the front and back cover is done by Chill "Will" Lindsey, who is the younger brother of Hogg. The record boasts an ample amount of seventeen tracks but still keeps one hungry for more. That is the true and uncanny nature of this underground masterpiece. Quality rhymes paired with quality rhythms, what more could a listener ask for.

Papa Reu - Xcuse Me!

Papa Reu - Xcuse Me!
Reuben Nero, better known as Papa Reu is a rapper and singer from the southside of Houston, TX. He is originally from the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago but later relocated to Houston at the age of sixteen. He started to build a name for himself by showcasing his reggae influenced style but what separated him from the rest was that he also incorporated Hip Hop into his explicit sound. It was 1994 and Reu got his first stint, he was enlisted by 8Ball & MJG as a back up vocalist for the song "Lick 'Em Up Shot" from their album "On The Outside Looking In." And it wasn't long before he started racking up all kinds of gigs for southern artists. Whether it was contributing his signature sound for the choruses or doing intros & outros and mini skits, Papa Reu provided it all. Xcuse Me! is his second album and it was released in 2000 on Upstairs Records and Reuster House Music, Inc. Production in its entirety is done by Rakesh "Roc" Jacob, Wendell Springer and Papa Reu himself. The beats carry the classic H-Town sound and are oozing with melody. There are a few tracks that are a bit mundane but most of them seem to be pretty well rounded. Lyrically the album is fairly versatile because Papa Reu can go from singing very gracefully to rapping very profoundly. His pace varies from track to track while his street savvy demeanor stays the same. Features are made by the Hot Boy$, Big Tymers, Z-Ro, Lil' Keke, C-Note, Lil' O, Boo, Lone Starzz, Ras Intelligence, Tripple M, Phoenix, Joe Traxx, Ali and Rashaad. All in all the album is a little guest heavy but still quite entertaining. He showed that he can be more than just a back up singer and instead of providing ad-libs, he provided a full length album. Over the years Papa Reu has collaborated with hundreds of artists from all over the nation. He continues to release new music to this day under his own record label known as Reu Muzik, Inc.

Will-Lean - The Chemist

William Gibbs better known as Will-Lean, is a rapper who represents from the notorious neighborhood of Cloverland in Houston, TX. He is a member of the Botany Boys as well as the legendary collective known as the Screwed Up Click. The Chemist is his debut solo album and it was released in 2000 on Big Shot Records. The production varies from track to track and it is provided by M. King, Double D, Bruce Rhodes, Swift, Willy Malone, J.P. Nitty, Eric Hollis, Noke D, Tone Capone, Jhiame, Crazy C and D-Red of the Botany Boys. With a lineup this star studded, it is damn near impossible to disappoint. The beats can be classified under the certified grade-A, Texas funk category. The groovy rhythms are filled with such melody that head bobbing is the only option left for the listener. Will is no newcomer on the microphone. Whether it was his early freestyles on Screw Tapes or his fast paced verses with the Botany Boys, he has always been considered to be a very strong and formidable lyricist. His sharp yet distinct tone combined with the use of clever word play is the recipe for all his rhymes. To top it all off, he also manages to deliver them at a decently quick pace and it is this deadly combination that separates him from the rest. Since no S.U.C. album is complete without an all star guest list, this release is no exception. Will-Lean made sure he invited all his good friends to share a spot beside him in the recording booth. Guest appearances are made by DJ Screw, the Botany Boys, E.S.G., Lil' O, Al-D, Big Moe, Big Pokey, Dat Boy Grace, Hawk, Enjoli, Lil' Flip, T-Pop, A.C.T., Mista Madd, Papa Reu, Guerilla Maab, H.$.E., Noke D, D-Reck, Big T, Ronnie Spencer, B.G. Duke, Scoopastar, Taz, Lil' Real and last but not least the Big Tymers. All in all it is a valiant effort by the Cloverland native and one that boasts sixteen choice cuts. Although it is a little guest heavy and the release went out of print very quickly, the tracks are all still top quality. Will-Lean is still relevant today as he continues to release mix-tapes while selling most of the copies right out of the trunk section of his vehicle.

Lil' Sin - My Secret

Ronald Warner Jr., better known as Lil' Sin is a rapper who represents from the eastside of San Antonio, TX. He has been around since the mid nineties and is also very well respected throughout the southern region. Sin first started off with his fellow "Sa Town" rapper, C-Ordell. They were signed to BLVD Records and both took the city by surprise with their excellent debut efforts. My Secret is his third album and it was released in 2000 on Unstoppable Records. The production is split between the trio of Micheal Terry, James Sproul and Jac. The beats can be described as a contemporary mix that emulates southern funk. Some of the melodies are light, while others are somewhat uptempo. They are a perfect blend of the old that is congenially mixed with the new. Lil' Sin is a pretty accomplished lyricist. His unorthodox flow pattern as well as his choice of distinct word play is brought feircely upon the microphone. His unique style is his weapon of choice and although four long years have passed since his debut, he still doesn't seem to miss a beat. Guest features are made by UGK, Ganksta NIP, Lil' Keke, Nino, Kottonmouth, Billy Cook, 3-2, Mr. Joshay, Jamie, King 13, Emanuel, MT, Uncle Roger and S.F.K. Overall the album has its fair share of ups and downs but it still does not disappoint. It is one of those many releases that despite great content, always somehow go unnoticed. Lil' Sin went on to release a few more records before switching his alias to Young Namar.

Cash Money Millionaires - Baller Blockin

Cash Money Millionaires was a super group from the notorious city of New Orleans, LA. It was formed in the late nineties and composed with the two existing groups, the Hot Boy$ and the Big Tymers. It consists of Baby, Mannie Fresh, Juvenile, Turk, Lil' Wayne and last but not least, B.G. The six men transformed into a very formidable force that spread like wild fire through the entire southern region of the United States. Baller Blockin is actually a soundtrack to the action and comedy film by the same name. It was released in 2000 on Cash Money Records. The production is mainly handled by Mannie Fresh along with a few other producers chipping in on some tracks like Pimp C of UGK, Livin' Proof, Stormy Day and Massive. As always, Fresh does not disappoint with what he brings to the table. He laces the beats with his signature style and makes sure they are worthy of carrying his name. The tracks contain numerous instruments and are very well put together. Different variations of the group are used for each song for this compilation type album so lyrically the album is acceptable. Juvenile, Wayne and B.G. being the standouts ofcourse. Aside from those three, there really is nothing more for the listener except for a couple of one liners from Fresh and Baby. Now there are some very good guest spots on here that belong to UGK, Nas, Mac 10, E-40, Eightball & MJG, Rappin'-4-Tay, The Bravehearts and Unplugged. The Millionaires eventually disbanded over monetary issues around the year 2002. One by one everyone left the label except Lil' Wayne. This was known as the rise and fall of the second generation of artists from Cash Money Records. Although it is now a thing of the past but one will always remember Cash Money by the masterful production of the great Mannie Fresh, who's superb style is still being imitated but can never be duplicated. A fierce flame spitting Juve who always brought the heat to the mic with his unorthodox flow pattern. A ruthless and fearless B.G. who's aggressive delivery was unmatched. A young and raw but extremely cold blooded Lil' Wayne who's lyrical dexterity is a direct result of mentoring by Bun B of UGK. Whether it was their solo recordings or group efforts, there was a point in time when Cash Money Records seemed damn near unstoppable.

D-Red - Smokin' & Lean'n 2000

D-Red - Smokin' & Lean'n 2000
D-Red is a multi talented artist from the neighborhood of Cloverland located on the south side of Houston, TX. He is known throughout the southern region for his superb production skills as well as his provability on the microphone. D-Red began his career in the mid nineties with the collective known as the "Botany Boys." After a lengthy stint with them, the group disbanded over incarcerations of members D-E-Z & Lil' 3rd as well as the untimely death of B.G. Gator. The remaining members decided to branch off towards solo projects. This is Red's debut solo album and it was released in 2000 on Big Shot Records. Production is handled by D-Red himself and he is assisted by Jhiame on one of the tracks. D-Red's approach for the tracks is a little different than his previous production pattern. He models the beats after the new millennium sound rather than the more accustomed hard, street sound. Somehow he still manges to deliver a good amount of quality tracks. Lyrics have also been somewhat minimized in the sense that they are just not strong enough. D-Red was a lot more vicious and lethal on the mic when he was with the Botany Boys. It seems here that he has either lost interest or that he is trying to change his style so that he can be more appealing to the mainstream. The sub par lyrics are also the reason why there is a guest appearance on each and every track. Now, there are some cuts that really stand out and shine. Guest appearances are made by the Botany Boys, Botany B.G.'z, Brew of Mass 187, Wood of the Half Dead Organization, South Park Mexican, Menace Clan, B-1 of the S.P.C., Se7en, Godfather, 2 Phace, T.P. Sin, Kirby-D, and 1 Da Boy. All in all it is a decent effort from the Cloverland native but it tends to fall short of anything more than just that. D-Red is also a member of the Screwed Up Click as well as the Clover Geez.

Fat Texas Records - Texas Made

Texas Made is a compilation disc that was released in 2000 by Fat Texas Records who are primarily based out of Dallas, TX. Michael Lopez is the CEO of the label and Michael Cardenas is his right hand man. This is their second release. The first one being "Family Tactics." Since this is a compilation, a gang of producers were used to make this project noteworthy. The beats are courtesy of Icey Hott of Street Military, KG, Avery Jones, Rebel, and Crank. The producers do a good job by providing that Texas style funk fused with that hard underground sound. A few tracks can be tossed out but for the most part all of them equally jam. Lyrics are done by K.B. Da Kidnappa & Icey Hott of Street Military, 3-2, Big Tee, Lil' Sen, Rebel, Tony Montana, Keys, J-Duce, Villian, Relentless Mafia, Miss Asia, and Carla McQueen. The pack of rappers listed above make sure they keep the lyrics very roguish. They team up with each other and start to pass the mic around. A good chunk of the track list really stands out while there are a few fillers. Also, all the tracks on this album have never been on any other album. Meaning tracks were precisely recorded just for this compilation so the material is at least genuinely fresh and not out dated. Overall it is a reputable effort but one that somehow went unnoticed. Fat Texas Records are defunct now but they will always be remembered and respected in the underground.

The record is basically an analect of various rappers whom all represent out of Missouri City, TX. Although artists like Lil' Flea of Street Military, PSK-13 of the South Park Coalition, members of the Fakkulty and C4 are absent, the record does have the majority of Mo City musicians rendering on it. This includes the likes of Z-Ro, the entire Half Dead Organization, Black Mike, B-1, III, Shano, Militant Soul, D-Ray, Lil' Devil, Amir, J-Bone, Jeff Reed and Mike. All the synth filled production is provided by Smittyroe of the Half Dead Organization, Black Mike, Infa Red and Byrd. The producers do a great job by keeping the beats relentless and making sure they carry that hardcore sound. While there are a couple tracks that are a bit slow and laid back, most of them have a dark street edged feel to them. Lyrics are nothing short of spectacular mainly due to the courtesy of the vile rappers listed above. Rhymes are portrayed in various manners and tend to change track after track. Some are delivered fast with tongue twisting styles and others are conveyed furiously with word play. The contents of the compilation range from ghetto tales to self conscious raps. Featuring on the album is Solo D of the Straight Profit Blockbleeders, Big Moe and Dat Boy Grace of the Screwed Up Click. All in all the record is a true and pure example of the underground scene from the Lone Star State. The collection served its' purpose by giving the listeners a deep genuine sound backed up by a commendable quality of substance.

Profound, Ltd. - Possession With Intent To Distribute

Profound, Ltd. - Possession With Intent To Distribute
Profound, Ltd. are a duo from Houston, TX. It consists of Groove and Banoe. Possession With Intent To Distribute is their debut album and it was released in 2000 on Red Boy Records. Production on the record is done by DJ Dolby D, Damon Spencer, Game-Be-No and Ulta E. The beats fuse elements of that classic southern funk with new wave melodies. That approach is firmly effective so the rhythms end up being thoroughly captivating. The tracks also happen to include decent amounts of chopping and scratching which are all courtesy of DJ Dolby D. The lyrics carry a sturdy vibe all throughout. Both members yield distinct styles and have the ability to spit. Groove delivers his fair share with a deeper tone and dialect while Banoe conveys with word play and content schemes. Their rhymes substantially vary just as well as their subject matter. The album starts off a bit on the club savvy side but quickly takes a turn towards a much more serious direction. Guest appearances are made by Pimp C of UGK, Lil' Keke of the Screwed Up Click, Legal Substanz, Low Down, A-Wall, Dolby D, Showtyme, I.B.G. and Red Boy. Overall the album contains good quality material and it is unblemished inside and out. It is one of the many gems that get released nationally but go unnoticed entirely. The duo had plans for a follow up album but that idea was later dropped mainly due to the mediocre attention and the lack of notoriety the group received.

Don Chino’s - Infamous Thug Syndicate

Don Chino’s - Infamous Thug Syndicate
Don Chino and the Infamous Thug Syndicate are an underground clique from the southside of Houston, TX. Don Chino is the leader of the group and his family consists of over fifteen members but the main ones are Marrow, Lil' Crucial, Big Baby, Tas, Lil Mac and the female emcee known as Queen Thug. This is their debut album and it was released in 2000 on Explicit Records. All the production is done in house by Don Chino himself. The beats are a true blend of synthesizers and drum machines. Regardless of the fact that they are simply made and void quality due to lack of proper equipment, they are still surprisingly good. Along with that they also manage to fit the group's persona perfectly. All members have the ability to spit on the mic. Each of them holds a distinct manner as well as vicious personalities. Most members tend to deliver tongue twisting rhymes at a high rate of speed while others like to use word play and justify their flows poetically. The group's identity is their raw and uncut characteristics that sets them apart from others. All in all the album is a lengthy collective of eighteen tracks that cover a vast variety of subjects. Despite the record being out of print and clearly hard to find, it still is a strict representation of the underground that manages to out shine most albums released today.
