Deep South Syndicate - Journey With The Syndicate

DSS, which stands for Deep South Syndicate, is a group that represents from the wicked streets of Lafayette, LA. Although they would be reduced to a trio later on, the original lineup consists of D-Flat, E.L., Killa B, Scrappy, B-Loc, Shook and Scooty. Journey With The Syndicate is their debut album and it was released in 1996 on Double L Records. The production is marvelously handled by Anthony "Booney" Woods and Edward "Jaz" Woods. Together, they provide nothing but that southern funk which is presented in a dark atmosphere. The rhythms carry a brash and hard sound which fits the group perfectly. Instruments are all used proficiently and originality is pursued with a passion. While some tracks are a bit simple and plain, they still are not disqualified from being enjoyable. Lyrics is where the album truly excels. Each member brings a provocative and unique style to the table. Their rhymes are offered sharp and to the point. Word play is used very efficiently and while their delivery is mostly rapid, it does tend to slow down for some cuts. Featuring on the album is Bosco Pooh. Overall, it's an excellent debut effort from the collective and one that can hold its' own against any premier release. The core content is not only genuine but also very truthful in the message that it gives. Deep South Syndicate went on to release one more album in the year 1998 and eventually disbanded. In the end, this album dwells from the depths of the underground and it serves as another prime example of Louisiana's rich musical history.

Kris Kross - Young, Rich & Dangerous

Kris Kross is a rap duo that hails from the acclaimed streets of Atlanta, GA. It consists of Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith and Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly. The names can get a bit confusing but that is by intention and design which in turn honors their combined alias. They are best known for their hit single "Jump" which is off their debut album "Totally Krossed Out" and also for their unique fashion sense which consisted of wearing their entire clothing outfit, backwards. They two were discovered at a local shopping mall in Atlanta by Jermaine Dupri when they were just thirteen years old and he immediately sensed the raw talent at hand. Young, Rich & Dangerous is their third album and it was released in 1996 on Ruffhouse Records. The production is done through the quintessential Jermaine Dupri and is certainly of top quality. The tracks are laced with his signature up beat pattern and are quite melodic. That distinct southern vibe is definitely present and the process of sampling is also put to good use. Lyrically the album falls a tad bit shy, especially when compared to the duo's last two outings. Although both are very capable and talented lyricists, there are times when the intensity just isn't there. Now granted this is when the duo was really trying to find their voice as well as their direction in the rap industry. Their last two albums were branded and marketed for the younger crowd while this one is aimed towards the older, street savvy generation. Guest appearances are made by Da Brat, Aaliyah, Big Rube, Mr. Black, Jermaine Dupri and Trey Lorenz. This record is split into two halves with six tracks belonging to each side. The Smith Side seems to be orientated for the streets while The Kelly Side is a bit more smooth and laid back. Overall the whole album is decently put together and while there maybe some low points, it still manages to finish on a high. It also help spawn one of the most notorious freestyles in southern rap history, the infamous "June 27" by the legendary DJ Screw who uses the instrumental of the track "Da Streets Ain't Right." On May 1st, 2013, Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly was found unresponsive in his home and was later pronounced dead. A toxicology report was released by the Atlanta Medical Center which stated that he had died from a drug overdose. He was only thirty four years old. Rest in peace to the innovative and the ever ingenious Chris Kelly.

Pimpsta - Texas Wada

Pimpsta - Texas Wada

Pimpsta is a rapper and producer who represents from the southside of Dallas, TX. He has been in the music industry since the early nineties and even established his own label called Skrilla Records. After the success of his debut record, "Dickies & House-Shoes" which spawned the local hit song by the same name, Pimpsta returned with the follow up Texas Wada in 1996 on Rrush Records. The production in its entirety is done by Luther Mitchell who provides all the southern fried tracks. The melodies easily carry that Texas funk and are quite groovy to say the least. Pimpsta is known in the deep south for his laid back persona as well as his signature funky style of delivery. The rhymes are straight forward but are filled with charm and energy. His style is pretty unique and its tailor made to fit perfectly for the beats provided. Although he's not a serious lyrical threat, he does manage to keep the listener entertained with catchy hooks and choice word play. Backup vocals are courtesy of Peaches, Kim Mitchell, Ro70, Jennifer White and Jenny Williams. Pimpsta is one of those artists that never get the recognition or attention they deserve. Throughout his long career, he cranked out local hits on just about every album he put out but somehow always went under the radar outside of Texas. For Pimpsta, the Dallas and Fort Worth area has been nothing short of rewarding and for those that were lucky enough to witness his form of artistry will have no problem vouching for him.

Da Buddha Klan

Da Buddha Klan is a group who represents from the hard hitting streets of Dallas, TX and it is led by Big Al of the Nemesis fame. Now Nemesis was more bass oriented and since that era faded away by the mid nineties, Al quickly decided it was time to move on, although he would later return for a reunion album in 2000. After a couple of minor production stints, he formed the Da Buddha Klan in the year 1995. He recruited rappers from different neighborhoods across Dallas and ended up with the members, Uptight, 211, IKS and Mayday the female emcee. After assembling a wide array of musicians and composers, Da Buddha Klan debuted on the infamous Profile Records in 1996. The production is top quality and is provided through various producers. The crew is led by Christopher Smith and Mabuta Ellison while assisted by Floyd Bonner (Guitar), Tim Grugle (Drums), Zach Johnson (Bass) and Roger Webb (Keyboards). The beats contain intricate rhythm patterns and are blended ever so exquisitely. The musicians did an excellent job with each of their respective instrument and the producers gave them a green light when it came to creativity. Lyrically the album is also superb. Da Klan doesn't waste any time getting started on the microphone and each member contributes evenly. Their rhymes are delivered very precisely and rapidly as well. The core content is straight out of gangster territory and can be considered equally rough. All the members are commendable lyricists and the two standouts being Uptight and Big Al. Guest appearances are made by War Loc and Lisa Schmitz who provides the background vocals. Overall this record is full of great content and it shines from all angles. What started out as a side project ended up easily exceeding expectations. Although Big Al passed away in 2000 and he garnered a great deal of success through his membership in the group Nemesis, this release can easily be placed with the best highlights of his career. Rest in peace to Albert "Big Al" English, one of the best to ever represent for Dallas, Texas.

Mac & Storm - Mad Or Jealous

Mac is a rapper who represents from the 3rd Ward of New Orleans, LA. Mad Or Jealous is an EP he released while collaborating with the female emcee, Storm. It is also Mac's first release after his 1989 debut on Yo! Records as Lil' Mac, "The Lyrical Midget." Six long years had passed and Lil' Mac had fully evolved into an astonishing lyricist with an untouchable rhyme pattern. He dropped his old moniker and re-entered the industry. Mad Or Jealous was released in 1996 on Ionique Records. Production is done by the one and only DJ Wop and it certainly exceeds expectations. Both artists take advantage of the platform laid out for them. Mac is well known throughout the South for being a top notch lyricist. He brought the profound rhymes to the table while Storm provided her unique style with a solid vibe. Their chemistry together is unmatched on the microphone and they seem to compliment each other very well. Although this was only released as a 12" EP  and also as a cassette single, there were plans for a full length album. That did not happen due to Mac devoting his time towards the then newly developed crew known as the Psycho Ward. Around this time Mac was also making appearances on local records from the city. The most noteworthy one being on B.G.'s "Chopper City." Those two infamous verses from that Cash Money record came across the ears of Master P which led to Mac ultimately joining the No Limit empire. Storm also went on to make a hand few guest appearances and eventually retired from the industry. One can only imagine how amazing this project would have been if only the duo had completed it. All in all this was a sufficient release from the Camouflage Assassin and it certainly etched itself as a valuable piece of New Orleans' rich, rap history.

Sircle Of Sin is a three man group from New Orleans, LA. It consists of Vile, Mr. Derek, and Meloo. This is their self titled debut album and it was released in 1996 on Southern Style Records. Production duties are assigned to Matt Buras and Ellis "Pops" Collinsworth. They provide that exemplary sound which "The Boot" is most known for. Instruments are put to good use and have been mixed and mastered beautifully. Tracks tend to be harsh and edgy yet they are still very subtle with melody. Sampling is kept to a minimum and originality is pursued with a passion. Each member is adequately accomplished as a lyricist. The trio don't waste any time and quickly start to trade verses back to back. Their narratives are depictions to the reality of street life and a man's self consciousness while living through it. This method retains the theme and sets the tone for the entire project. Featuring on the album is Lord Sepia and J. An ample total of eleven choice cuts are provided for the listener and each one tells a dope tale of its' own. Overall it is a very gloomy and sorrowful record and one that manages to deliver that exact point across. The album also happens to musically capture the true essence and genuine demeanor of the notorious city of New Orleans.

The Texas Shootout is a very unique type of album that was released in 1996 on Elite Records. Some might classify this record as a compilation but it is truly much more than just that. It is constructed with six bona fide lyricists whom all represent out of Houston, TX. The banging production is provided by Noel "The Chief" Aleman and it easily exceeds expectations. Each track is made with exquisite precision and is filled with many notable instruments. These are some top quality rhythms and they can only be described as that genuine hardcore sound which had surrounded the city of Houston in the mid ninety's. Now with that being said, the album is divided into four parts. Each part is assigned to an artist and each of them delivers four tracks a piece. The record begins with a bonus group track and then splits into its' appropriate sections. Leading the charge is a group called Critical Madnez. It is a duo made up of two females who are under the aliases, Critical and Madnez. Their style is very exclusive and it should not be taken lightly. Both of them excel on the mic and their rhymes are equally rough. They can certainly hold their own and are responsible for tracks two through five. Madnez also chips in as a back up vocalist on different tracks for other members. Next up is Snipe, who is also known as "Da Funky 1/2 Breed." He rips tracks six through nine and spits them at a sensible rate. He also possesses a solid vocabulary and is not afraid to use it. Snipe's performance on the record is definitely one of the ones that stand out. Following after that is the roguish duo known as Infrared. It consists of Grinch and Ginx. Their assault on the mic is dreadfully ruthless and harsh. They abundantly trade verses and provide tracks ten through thirteen. The final artist to contribute is Wood, who later became a member of the infamous Half Dead Organization. As always, he does not disappoint on the microphone. His raw tongue twisting rhymes are present and are clearly cold blooded. Wood concludes the album with tracks fourteen through seventeen. He executed them in such a superb manner that it is certainly worthy of mentioning. Overall the record is a complete hidden gem and it is put together very immensely. Each artist conveyed a solid presentation which in turn made it a necessity to own. The album ended up being out of print mostly because of the record label shutting down over financial issues. Also members Snipe, Infrared and Critical Madnez later became members of the group called, "Aggravated."

Ganksta NIP - Psychotic Genius

Ganksta NIP is a rapper from the neighborhood of South Park in Houston, TX. He is considered among the first members of the notorious South Park Coalition. He's also the proud founder of the genre known simply as Horrorcore Rap or Psycho Rap. This is his third album and it was released in 1996 on Rap-A-Lot Records. Production on this gem is done by the legendary Mike Dean, N.O. Joe, Swift and Mike B. They provide nothing but dark synth filled beats that are made with maximal melodies. As always, Ganksta NIP comes hard with his flow. His rhymes show no regard towards human life and they are severely savage. Featuring artists are Point Blank and Foe Five. At the time of this album's release, the city of Houston was plagued with a lot of controversy. A young male had shot and killed a police officer. A cassette tape of Ganksta NIP's previous recordings was found inside the male's automobile. Both the media and society immediately blamed NIP and his music for the actions committed by the young man. All the negative press that Ganksta NIP received got him the exposure he was eagerly after. He quickly released Psychotic Genius and the album eventually ended up going platinum. It was also marked as the first album by NIP to collect such an award.

The Ave is a group from West Palm Beach, FL. The three members are Drastic, City and Ovaflo. This is their debut album and it was released in 1996 on Too Tight Records. Production is handled by Quarter, Drastic and Chuck Heman. The beats are composed with heavy synths and deep bass lines. They contain that southern 90's gangsta funk all through out the record. All three members contribute ruthlessly on the mic. Their rhymes are fierce and are mostly directed towards society. Featuring artists are AK47 and the Royal Tragedy Cartel. During the mid 90's, not many groups from Florida maintained their composure like The Ave did. Their sound differed from the rest and they were definitely ahead of their time. Overall the record shines with remorseless content and it certainly has a dark feel to it.

3-2 or Mr. 3-2, is a rapper from the neighborhood of Hiram Clarke in Houston, TX. He was also known as Lord 3-2 in the early 90's. He was a member of the group called the Convicts, the Blac Monks and the Southside Playaz. This is his debut solo album and it was released in 1996 on Rap-A-Lot Records. The team behind the production are none other than the highly skilled and legendary producers known as Mike Dean, John Bido, N.O. Joe, Crazy C and Swift. They dropped some of the most funkiest and mellowest beats ever to grace a record. While 3-2 is known for his smooth vocal delivery and laid back flow. The combination of beats and lyrics set the album up perfectly. It holds the ability to ride and play itself out. Featuring on the record is UGK, Too $hort, Southside Playaz, Sonia Moore, 8-Ball and MJG. The album also contains an excellent remix of the Blac Monk track known as "Buddah Nature." Overall the record sustains great material along with an all-star appearance of guests and it is considered to be in the classic category.

Sniper Unit is a group from Atlanta, GA. The two members are DJ Swift C and Big L. This dope album was released in 1996 on Ichiban Records. Production was mainly handled by Swift C and he did an excellent job. The beats are composed with some solid synths and samples. Both members can spit above average and are decent when they trade verses back to back. Featuring on the album is MC Breed, Cool Breeze, Backbone, T-Double, Hurricane and Sir Charles. Even though this record contains good material, it is still very slept on. The two members later returned in 2002 with the addition of Cool Breeze and their new alias, "The Calhouns."

His rhymes are eerie yet fast. They also hold solid amounts of word play. This album has one appearance and its by Magnolia Slim aka Soulja Slim. Lokee was always seemed ahead of his time. The production and the lyrics not only prove that but also show versatility and not to mention his own unique style which he likes to call Voodoo Gangsta Funk.

Mr. Mike is a prolific rapper from Houston, TX. He is also one half of the group known as South Circle. This his debut solo album and it was released in 1996 on Suave House Records. Production was provided by the one and only T-Mixx. The beats are very funk influenced and contain some solid bass lines and minor sampling. Lyrically, Mike has a great flow. He is quite deep and rich with word play. Guest appearances are made by Ice Cube, 8-Ball & MJG, Nola, E-A-Ski, O.C., Christion and Nina Creque. A dope record altogether, even though there are some fillers on here. Mr. Mike went on to release albums through out the 1990's and the early 2000's. Since then he has quietly retired from the rap game.

Production was managed by T-Mixx, Jazze Pha, Slice Tee and Insane Wayne. The beats are nothing short of spectacular. The tempo swings and mixing are all done to perfection. This helps give the record a solid foundation and also that distinct southern twang. Featuring on the album are label mates 8-Ball & MJG along with Mr. Mike, Crime Boss, Nola, Low Key and Baby Dre. Many will agree that this album is considered to be in the classic category. Tela would soon leave Suave House Records over financial disputes and would make himself a home at Rap-A-Lot Records.

Facemob is a group that was created by the legendary Scarface of the Geto Boys. It was formed around the talents of five different rappers from five different cities and states. He recruited Devin The Dude who although would later relocate and represent Houston but is originally from St. Petersburg, Florida. He then went to St. Paul, Minnesota and picked up DMG. After that he got 350, the female emcee from Cleveland, Ohio. Next stop was Chicago, Illinois where he met Chi-Ray. Finally they were back to Houston, Texas and got one last member who is also a childhood friend of Scarface known as Smit-D. The group was formed and now it was time to hit the recording studios. This is their debut album and was released in 1996 on Rap-A-Lot Records. Production was done by Scarface along with Mike Dean and N.O. Joe. They team up to provide the dope, funk laced beats. The lyrics are hard but at times they lack foundation. All five members have their own style and they flow according to that. At times their chemistry seems on point and then there are moments where it suffers. Featuring on the record is Scarface. The group went on to release one more album and then broke up. The break up was mostly because of lack of success for the group and members focusing on their solo careers. This record is also known for starting Scarface's career as a full fledged producer.

Featuring artists are Play 'R, Cisco, Alias Clay and Bridgette Fontaine. As a group they went on to release a couple more albums and then eventually disbanded. Also some of the members have solo and collaboration records.

Fakkulty is a group from the vicious streets of Houston, TX. The four members in the group are Kook, Malek Aleem, Lil' V, and Water Boy. The group is also affiliated with S.P.C. (South Park Coalition) and the Killa Klan. This album was released in 1996 on X-Bam Records. Production was done by Danny Jackson, Doc Doom, Ronald Smith, Rodney Ex and Sinclair. The beats are simply amazing and so are the lyrics. Appearances are by K.B. Da Kidnappa & Lil' Flea of Street Military, Papa Reu, Vonda Hubbard, and Ray Sauls. This is one of the most slept on albums one will ever come across. Also the text written on the album cover is written in Greek and it reads, "Those that break the rules. Dare to deny authority. Educate the street and strengthen the weak."
