Reese & Bigalow is a duo that represents from the infamous Wood Street in Jackson, MS. They first started out in the early nineties as members of The Renegades. The group was one of the first acts to represent for the city of Jackson and eventually paved the way for many other artists, Reese and Bigalow left the group after their initial release and formed their duet while Lon Trigga of The Renegades went on to form the notorious, Wood Street Playaz. Unfinished Business is their second album and it was released in 2000 on Lil Mann's Records. Production is equally split between Mike B, Gutta Boy and JB Money. The beats are Southern in composure and while most of them are fairly enjoyable, there are some that lack a bit of energy and edginess. The three producers do a decent job at constructing the rhythms but it's their simple approach at times that takes a hit. Lyrically, the album is quite good. Both, Reese and Bigalow are pretty adequate on the microphone and their verbal chemistry is also reasonably strong. Their rhymes display constant word play and are also delivered at a fair rate. Guest appearances are courtesy of 20-2-Life, PSK-13, South Park Mexican, Ska-Face Al Capone, Bone Crusher, Crooked Lettaz, King Goldi, Poetic Preachaz, Dez, J2, Frank Da Macka and Fe-Fe. The album closes out with a commendable total of sixteen tracks and the rock solid guest list makes it that much harder to deny. Overall it's a noble release that has a good amount of highs instead of the lows. The only knock on it is the basic production but even with that blemish the album manages to sustain itself. Reese & Bigalow went on to release one more album in 2002 before slowly fading out of the music industry. The groups' unlucky demise was brought by the hands of the Atlanta based rapper known as Bone Crusher. Bone, who was signed to Jermaine Dupri's label known as So So Def, was once a loyal friend who quickly turned foe over ownership of a single track. The song in question is called "Neva Sked" and it comes from Reese & Bigalow's 2002 release known as, "Playa Music." The track featured a verse from Bone Crusher and Killer Mike. It was produced by Avery Johnson and was purchased by Reese & Bigalow for their new album. The exact same song was released by Bone Crusher for his debut album in the year 2003 and the only major difference was the verses of Reese & Bigalow were removed and replaced with a verse from T.I. The title was also changed to "Never Scared." Bone Crusher's version of the song ended up being a chart topping hit and eventually propelled him into the limelight. Reese & Bigalow did file a law suit against Bone Crusher over copyright infringement but they never got the recognition or the praise for the original song. They were most likely paid off by the deep pockets of Jermaine Dupri and were supposedly told to keep their mouths shut about the whole issue. It's unfortunate what happened to Reese & Bigalow but then again it just goes to show how corrupt some of these major labels are and how how cruel this music industry can be at times.

Young Smitty - Takin Over

Young Smitty is a rapper from Tyler, TX. Best known for his collaboration with the Underground Kingz on the song "Tossed Up" from the Major Players Compilation by Mean Green. He was 16 years old when he first met UGK in 1997 at a show in Lake Charles, LA. To this day he still considers Bun B and Pimp C (R.I.P.) as his role models and mentors. Smitty was also among the first group of artists that were brought to the Trill Entertainment label by Pimp C. Takin Over is his debut album and it was finally released in 2001 on Imperial Entertainment after numerous attempts and mishaps. It is magnificently produced by Steve Below and Dale "Rambro" Ramsey while DJ Dolby D provides his signature style of mixing and scratching. The beats can simply be summed up as a collective of southern funk straight from Texas. The producers intent was to achieve a laid back sound that is accomplished through multiple instruments and displayed very generously. Lyrically the album is a little on the lack luster side. Although Smitty possesses a commendable rhyme pattern and is really proficient on the microphone, he does tend to get somewhat repetitive. The album can be split into two halves due to lack of intensity and quality of content. The release might have its fair share of highs and lows but it still should not discourage the listener. Guest appearances are made by UGK, PSK-13, A-Dam-Shame and 3re Da Hardaway. All in all it is a solid attempt by Smitty Da Pimp and one that somehow went unnoticed. It could have been the incarceration that he faced up until 2009 or the early falling out between him and the Trill Ent. label that marred the album from achieving any kind of prominent success.

Klondike Kat is a pioneer of underground rap from Houston, TX. He possesses a tremendous amount of lyrical talent and charisma. He is also an avid singer as well as a renowned producer. Over the years he has been lending his skills to the likes of the South Park Coalition and the legendary Killa Klan. The Lyrical Lion is his debut album and it was released in 1993 on Beatbox Records. Production is provided by Dope-E of The Terrorists, Keenan Lyles, J Reble and Klondike Kat. The beats are a synthetic blend of early 90's gangsta rap. They rely heavily on the 808 with minor keyboards. Although the rhythms might sound dated, the fact that they are magnificently composed and mixed cannot be denied. The lyrics are made up of the same caliber. Kat crushes the mic with an onslaught of vile rhymes. He brilliantly displays his lyrical flair, track after track. Not to mention his dope story telling ability and the deeply rooted choruses. Featuring on the album are members of the infamous S.P.C. That roster includes K-Rino, Point Blank, PSK-13, A.C. Chill, Dope-E, Aftamath, Kyu-Boi, Bullet, K.O., Triple X, Reload, Black Capone and Bubba Trouble. The album also contains the near ten minute clique anthem known as the "Murder Script." Overall the record is a bit shy with only seven tracks but all of them are equally superior. The South Park Coalition is responsible for being mentors to many present and up coming artists from Texas. Even though, one wont find them or Klondike Kat on the front page cover of a well established magazine, their devotion and love for the underground still remains persistent.

Klondike Kat is a multi talented artist from the neighborhood of South Park in Houston, TX. He's a genuine lyricist, a marvelous producer and an excellent singer. He has been in the business for over twenty years and is very well respected. He also holds membership in the legendary South Park Coalition as well as the infamous Killa Klan. He debuted in 1993 with the album, "The Lyrical Lion." Mobbin' Muzik Melodies is his sophomore effort and it was released in 1997 on Beatbox Records. Production on the album is managed by Icey Hott of Street Military, Mo' Dangerous, Stro, Richard Johnson and Klondike Kat. The beats are assembled with twangy guitars, an ample amount of bass and forceful synths. The array of tracks are soundly mixed and they carry the album especially well. Kat can deliver his rhymes with an approximate sense of ease. His style is unique and his verses flourish with broad subjects. He possesses a vivid vocabulary and leisurely displays it on every ballad. Along with that, he boldly sings most of the hooks and choruses. Guest appearances are made by members of the Killa Klan and the South Park Coalition. That include the likes of Pharoah, Icey Hott, Lil' Flea, Burton Boyz, Fakkulty, K-Rino, Dope-E, Point Blank, Ganksta NIP, Ice Lord, PSK-13, A.C. Chill, Blunt, Jam, Big 20 and Felony. The album also contains two notorious cuts that have ever graced a record. One of them is an eight minute long anthem of the superior Killa Klan known as, "Loc'ed Out Drop Top." The other is a nine minute long S.P.C. tribute, which happens to be the next installment to the original "Murder Script." All in all the record can simply be justified as a melodic classic. Klondike Kat showcases his capability as a pure artist and he certainly provides the underground with a complete masterpiece.

Yungstar is a rapper from the southwest side of Houston, TX. He has been rapping since the age of ten and he was also a member of the Screwed Up Click. He is known for his tongue flipping rhymes and fast paced freestyles which he recorded with the legendary DJ Screw. This is his debut album and its also the original version which was released in 1999 on Straight Profit Records. Production is done by Sean Lee, Slack, Ron Forest, Jhiame and Craig Bird. The beats can simply be described as Texas funk. They contain some solid samples and banging bass lines. Yungstar and the Straight Profit Block Bleeders take advantage of every track and they use their trademark rhyme schemes all through out. Almost every rapper from the southwest side is featuring on this record. Guest appearances are made by Z-Ro, Dat Boy Grace, L.O.S., Wood of the Half Dead Organization, C-Nile The Golden Child, 2 Low, Lil' Flex, Al-D, C-Note of the Botany Boys, Lil' O, T-Pop, Ace Deuce, Papa Reu, South Park Mexican, PSK-13, Lil' Flip, R.W.O., Solo D, Silkk Breeze, Deep Threat, Black 1, Trey-D, J-Mac, Den Den and Jasmine. The album also contains a seventeen minute freestyle and it is known as the Straight Profit version of the infamous June 27th, which was originally created by DJ Screw. Overall its a wonderful debut album that jump started Yungstar's career and it managed to sell well over 40,000 copies. It was later picked up by Epic Records and re-released in a revised form in 2000.

World Wide Riders is a group from Galveston Island, TX. The trio consists of Mista Hog, Jak Da Rippa and Sniper Rich. This is their debut album and it was released in 1999 on Salty Water Records. Production on this album is done by Icey Hott of Street Military, Klondike Kat of the South Park Coalition, Pancho V and Chocstilli. Beats are hard hitting and are strictly southern gangsta funk. Their flows are hardcore and fast paced. The lyrics are precisely rooted to each beat and are mixed very properly. Featuring on the record is PSK-13, South Park Mexican, Klondike Kat, Lifestyl, K.B. Da Kidnappa and Icey Hott of Street Military. Although this album was a strong effort by the group, it did not gain much attention due to its hard and unyielding nature.

Wreckless Klan is a group from Houston, TX. The three members are Point Blank, Ice Lord and PSK-13. This was the group's only album and was released in 1996 on Bigtyme Recordz. Production on this record is done by the magnificent Bruce "Grim Reaper" Rhodes. He is assisted by the likes of DJ Blast and Marlin Demby. The beats are hard hitting and are also backed up by killer rhymes. Features on the album are from Klondike Kat and Maré Jayne. This group is also affiliated with the South Park Coalition (S.P.C.). The album was dedicated in the memory of Point Blank's younger brother. Rest in peace .38.
