Twank - Is Coming!

Twank - Is Coming!
Twank also formerly known as Big Twankie is a rapper from Houston, TX. He later changed his alias again and is now known as Twank Star. He first started rhyming at the tender age of only fourteen. As he got older, he began showcasing his talents on the streets by getting himself into freestyle battles all over town. He ended up getting the attention of Music District, who were looking to sign a rising star. Is Coming! is his debut album and it was released in 2005 on Music District Records. Production is done by Russell Revo and it is very bland to say the least. The tracks have this new wave feel to them and seem to lack basic fundamentals. The use of actual instruments are pretty much slim to none and the beats are generally derived electronically. Also, each cut is strikingly similar to the next. Twank is decent on the microphone. He is not great and not extremely bad either but he can be placed somewhere in the middle. His rhyming pattern is very tedious and comes off as overly repetitive. His word play one the other hand is quite good and probably the only thing thats keeping this project afloat. Also, the choruses and hooks are way too simple. They need to be done properly by an actual singer and not by Twank himself. The idea was to incorporate elements of the R&B genre in his songs, not only did that recipe fail but it also drives the listener away. There are a total of sixteen tracks and all of them are just thrown together with no sense of general foundation. The artist seems to be claiming affiliation to the streets but the content of the album is very dance savvy and club orientated. All in all the record seems to be poorly managed from the ground up. The label is not the only one to blame for this but also the artist himself. Now granted this is a contemporary 2005 release but that still does not excuse the negligence that is on display here. The whole point is to deliver a work of art that will be remembered by the masses and not something that would be casted aside as a coaster for cold drinks.

Dirty Red - Gift Of Gab

Dirty Red - Gift Of Gab
Dirty Red is a rapper who hails from the notorious neighborhood of Oak Cliff in Dallas, TX. He also holds membership in the Starvin' Artists family. Gift Of Gab is his debut solo album and it was released in 2005 on Mob Muzic Records. Production is provided by Ivan Benson, Pimp C of UGK and Rashard Hall. The beats are a blend of the new wave of southern funk and they certainly compliment Red's style of delivery. Although the classic southern sound might be a little absent, the artist more than makes up for it with a healthy dosage of steady rhymes. He possesses a decent amount of lyrical dexterity and his flow is mostly well rounded. The album contains a total collection of eighteen tracks, many of which are quite notable while some happen to be mundane fillers. Guest appearances are made by UGK, Six Two, Shogun, Young Muhammad, Sky, Deion, Zac, Hump and Lil' Flip. Overall the record is a solid offering from a fresh and upcoming artist. Even though some may discard the album and deem it as passable, it still deserves to a honorable mention.

K.E.V - Street Trophy

K.E.V is a rapper originally from Houston, TX. He later resided in Los Angles, CA where he went to school with the future Death Row Records artist, Kurupt. He was also a member of the group called Rap Mafia. Street Trophy is his debut solo album and it was released in 2005 on Centerline Entertainment. Production is provided by Willie Brown, Howard Lipp and Patrick Hildebrand. The beats are mostly derived through marvelous keyboarding. They contain steady rhythms and certainly hold an abundance of melodies. The record truly shines in the lyrical department instead of production wise. Rhymes are highly meaningful and K.E.V definitely spits them with a purpose. His tone is very distinct and simultaneously diverse. He also has a tremendous vocabulary and he uses it without hesitation. The core content is basically a perspective of life delivered through his thoughts and experiences. Overall the record precisely separates itself from the rest and the subject matter is easy to relate to. The album is also dedicated in the memory of four of his fallen comrades.

Soldiers United 4 Cash - On The Southside

http://2b237175.linkbucks.com/
On The Southside is a compilation album by rappers from Houston, TX. It was released in 2005 on Starz Music, after the death of the legendary DJ Screw. Although there is no original or authentic DJ Screw material on here, it does have members of the Screwed Up Click. Production is done by TJ and it is mediocre at best. Some of the beats standout but the rest seem to be one dimensional. Lyrics are decent as well. Once again, some of them shine and others tend to be fillers. Featuring artists are Z-Ro, Dat Boy Grace, Al-D, Trae, Will Lean, Lil' Flip, Playa Dee, Lil' Ron of the Swisha House, Def Souf, Solo-D, Lil' Q, Big Shasta, Mobb Figgaz, JJ and Fila. Also the album cover holds the "Parental Advisory" tag but some of the lyrics are censored. Overall the record sustains suitable content and it is worth a listen. Starz Music tried to capitalize on DJ Screw's name and his legacy but ended up with an indifferent effort.

The Infamous X-Mann - History In The Making

The Infamous X-Mann - History In The Making
X-Mann is a rapper from the northside of Houston, TX. This is his sophomore effort and it is the follow up to "The Man Behind The Madness." X-Mann was also a late member of the infamous Trinity Garden Cartel. History In The Making was released on his own label, X-Werks Entertainment in 2005. Production is provided by the great Mike B. The beats are an ensemble of legit tracks which are laced with that southern funk. The samples and hooks are all well used and they certainly carry that H-Town sound. Lyrics are well written but can be bland at times. X-Mann delivers his raw style with an overwhelming force and at times, comes off as overly repetitive. Featuring on the album is OG Style, Cory Mo, 55, JD, P-Dot, Humpdog, Paul Revere, Camillion, A-Dog, Chill, Snake, J-Ram, Lil' Blue, Lil' O and Hawk of the Screwed Up Click. Overall it is a decent record and one that tries to live up to its' name but it happens to fall just a tad bit short.
